The two covers in question were deposited with the British Consul at Surabaya, Java, with all other important Ship's Documents and for the depositing of which I hold an official receipt."

It is probable that other similar shipments which left Sandakan prior to the above, were also lost, diverted, or otherwise unaccounted for, and similar claims will be made as and when details become available.

We request that notice of all the above shall

be recorded.

Apart from such shipments made as agents for the Hong Kong Government, it has been the practice of this Company to maintain stocks of Timber at Hong Kong, sent to our agents for disposal at the periodical auctions held there. The actual figures of stocks at the time Hong Kong fell into enemy possession are not yet available.

I am instructed by the Directors to give

notice that our Company will claim to be indemnified by the Government in respect of any loss sustained, whether arising through seizure or destruction by the enemy or requisitioning by the Government or otherwise, and we request that this claim shall be noted.
